EXPANSION TANK COMPONENT UNDERSTANDING

ROLE & OPERATION

The expansion tank is an important engine cooling product.

This small but essential part ensures a constant coolant flow by absorbing excess water pressure caused by thermal expansion, helps to reduce the coolant hammer, protects the engine cooling system from stress, and reduces waste by re-distributing the excess coolant back into the system when the pressure drops.

LOCATION IN THE VEHICLE

All expansion tanks are placed in the front of the vehicle in connection with the radiator.

IMPORTANT TO KNOW

  • To help avoid and prevent premature failures, the expansion tank should be checked annually.

  • A blocked expansion tank can cause leaking or bursting in the engine cooling system as the connections, fixtures and components get stressed and damaged due to excess pressure.

  • If the expansion tank is leaking, the engine could overheat as the level of coolant in the system could decrease.

  • Note the coolant level in the expansion tank when the engine’s cold. Once the engine reaches operating temperature, the level must rise. If it doesn’t, the system is not operating properly.
