TURBO FUNDAMENTALS

ROLE

Turbo increases engine efficiency and thus its power output. It is a turbine-driven device that forces extra air into the engine's combustion chamber.

OPERATION

The turbo consists of a turbine and a compressor coupled by a common shaft. Operation of the turbo depends on the engine's exhaust gases. The energy of the exhaust gas flow is extracted and enables the turbocharger compressor to pump the air.

Turbo operation depends on various components across different systems in the vehicle.

IMPORTANT TO KNOW

  • The turbo is a highly sophisticated and fragile component.
Improper working conditions and specifically dirt and foreign objects inside the system can easily damage the turbo.

  • Turbo functionality relies on various systems in the vehicle. Regular vehicle service, good condition of the engine and proper combustion, are of crucial importance for the turbo's proper operation and vitality.

  • Lubrication is one of the most critical aspects for turbo operation.

05 Expelled exhaust gases

06 Charged air

High-temperature and pressure exhaust gases enter the turbine-side coming directly from the combustion chamber.

RELIABLE, HIGH-PRECISION ELECTRIC TURBO ACTUATION

To achieve optimal performance, advanced engine designs utilize turbochargers with electronically controlled actuators.

The actuator's electronic control allows for precise and stable management of the exhaust gas flow within the turbocharger. This solution enhances performance and provides improved diagnostic capabilities.

Through collaboration with experts in electrification, various e-Actuator Nissens Turbo models apply OE-manufactured electric units.

NISSENS TURBO WITH OE ACTUATORS

The precise process of the electrical actuator turbo assembly ends with the necessary calibration of the electrical unit.

The regulation secures the fine-tuned turbo flow control, which is needed for modern engines operating in various working parameters and specifically for given engine applications.

E-ACTUATED TURBO UNDERSTANDING

DESIGN

Rotary electric actuator is one of the most popular designs for turbos with eActuators. The solution applies a direct stepper DC motor moving an actuating arm and thereby controlling the vanes' position.

OPERATION

Vehicle's Engine Control Unit (ECU) calculates the necessary vanes' position for the requested load of the engine and transmits the value to the electronic actuator. The electronic actuator with integrated position sensor adjusts the vanes by a rod to the requested position and supervises the function by itself.

ADVANTAGES OF USE

  • Smooth and continuous vanes' position control
  • Quick reactive control fully matching the given engine needs
  • Can be applied for Variable and Wastegate turbos
  • No dependence on vehicle's pressure/vacuum system, thus simpler architecture
  • Higher diagnostics capabilities

Because the voltage can provide a very precise signaling control, the electric actuation provides a very accurate, smooth and fast control of the variable turbo's vane mechanism.

TECHNICAL SUPPORT

We at Nissens fully understand the necessity of a solid turbo education. Since our role is to support the independent sector, we take it seriously to share the knowledge with our customers. That is why, in our product portfolio, there are not only high quality products, but also a widely ranging library of technical support material.
